Working in the Federal Government

The federal government employs about 2 million civilian workers making it the biggest employer in the US! Plus, most of the employees aren't stuck in the capital - around 85% percent work outside of D.C. in places all over the country. There is even the opportunity to work outside the country - the government employees over 50,000 people overseas. According to a survey on the best places in work in the federal government the top three agencies are Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Government Accountability Office, and Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. Think your major doesn't apply in order for you to work in agencies such as these? Think again! Government agencies employ people with a variety of majors. President's Service Volunteer Awards

If you are between 15 and 25 and have done tons of community service through 2010 (and up until January 2011), you should look into applying for the President's Service Award. The qualifications for the awards are as follows: Gold level: 250+ hours; Silver level: 175-249 hours; Bronze level: 100-174 hours. Alpha Phi Omega will host a ceremony for those who qualify in February 2011.

In order to apply, you need to create a profile on www.presidentialserviceawards.gov . There you can log your hours and APO will certify them for you and, if you qualify, order your award. Once you apply, go to the Profile tab and under 'Your Record of Service Key' box enter this code: KZT-35128 so that your name will be posted on APO's website.

Probation Officers

The market for probation officers, as well as other types of officers, is expected to grow in the near future. These jobs, although they do require a four year college degree in either social or behavioral sciences, could be perfect for many college students who are looking to find a job in public service when the job market is not being so friendly. Officers such as probation, parole, and corrections officers have job security because as well all know crime is never going to disappear, and they offer a great starting salary. Critical Language Scholarship Program

Are you studying a language that is of interest to the State Department such as Arabic or Chinese? Then you should check out the Crtitical Language Scholarship Program! If you are selected, the CLS program will send you to your target country for free to be a participant in 7-10 week intensive group-based study. By sending students of all majors with some background in a language (each language has specific requirements as to how many years you need of previous study) to study abroad, the CLS Program hopes to increase the number of American students who speak these critical languages.
