Federal Jobs Career Day - What I found out

Friday, I went to the Federal Jobs Career Day at Rutgers - there were many federal employers there including the US Secret Service, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, US Attorney's Office, the NSA, Department of Commerce and many more.

If you want a list of what the employers were looking for - I have a list in my office. Please stop by during any drop in hours. They are list on the side of the blog page!

Some employers had internships and full time positions, while other were promoting SCEP programs - these are programs geared towards a students major - 640 hours of experience. Usually you have to be a sophomore to apply. How can you find out about SCEP? Go to usajobs.gov and set up a profile, visit makingthedifference.org and go to the departments website. Be vigilant.

SCEP programs are competative so you must have a passion for this type of work.

If you have questions, please make an appointment with The Career Center.

*The FBI and the DEA forensic lab will be on campus Tuesday, Nov. 17 from 4-5:30 in the Science and Technology Center Atrium*

Show Your Distinction

In this tight job market, it’s not enough to be a qualified applicant, since there are plenty of candidates.

Don’t ask, “What do you have for me?” Instead go in with the mentality of, “Here’s what I can do for you.” Talk to other attendees. Some of the best successes come from connections made between women who just strike up conversations. Spend some time in our networking area to get to know others. These are the people who can get your foot in the door.

Women For Hire’s New York Career Expo on Wednesday, Nov. 4 is the perfect opportunity for you to impress recruiters with your preparation, such as knowing all about their organization and having your 30-second pitch down cold.

  • Employers are open to coming to campus to speak to clubs, but it's a good idea to partner with your Career Center and remain professional at all times! Confirm, confirm, confirm.
  • Make use of employers that are on campus, it's easier to connect with someone in person.
  • Recruiters are moving away from using Monster and Hotjobs. LinkedIn.com (a social networking site for professionals) is being used more and more.
  • Students are fine with technical skills but lack soft skills like communication and writing.
  • Career Fairs - Introduce yourself and highlight your skills and RESEARCH the company. It's a no no to hand your resume to an employer and say - so what jobs/internships do you have for me?
  • When answering interview questions, do just that, answer the question asked - use the STAR method. Situation, Task, Action, Result.
  • Employers seek flexibility, drive and demonstrated interest in the field.
  • Your resume should show your passions - what makes you different. Highlight leadership.
  • Already have an internship? Do great work but also connect with those around you - they will notice and may ask you to stay on!
Yesterday, I attended an employer panel. Reps from Johnson & Johnson, Paychex, FedExGround, MTV and Hilton were present.

Here is what they had to say:

Law School Confidential: Program Overview

I just came back from a program on campus called Law School Confidential. It's a yearly program that is put on each October that is hosted by The Career Center and the Seton Hall's pre-law advisor.

Here is a summary of what the panelists, who included an LSAT teacher, a law school admissions counselor, a pre-law advisor, a 1st year Seton Hall Law student and a 3rd year NYU student.

  • There is no one clear, correct or perfect path to getting into law school. Experiences between students differ - some may get a masters and then apply, some may work and then apply and some may transition into law school once they complete their bachelors work.
  • You can have any undergraduate major to get into law school - what matters is that you enjoy what you are learning and therefore you do well in your classes. Taking courses that differ from others in your major will set you apart from other applicants i.e. a biology student that minors in English. Students in Philosophy, English and Economics score the highest on the LSATs.
  • Personal statements are the only way an admissions rep is going to get to know you. Many times you won't get an interview. Write, write and re-write. One panelist rewrote her personal statement 10 times. Have many people read your statement.
  • Internships are great ways to figure out if law is a possible career path but also to give you something to write about in your statement.
  • The LSATs can only be taken 3 times in a two year period. You should take practice tests before you take the LSAT for real. Most often you will take the test the summer before your senior year.
  • The Academic Resource Center in A&S Hall will help with personal statements and the pre-law advisor will help as well.
