The Obama Administration Hopes to Fill 50,000 to 60,000 Entry-level Jobs in the Next Year!

Steve Ressler, creator of GovLoop

As the baby-boomers step out of their federal positions, they are making room for 50,000 to 60,000 entry-level jobs in areas such as security, public health, and defense. One in three of the 142,690 federal workers hired last year was 29 or younger, while more than one in four were between 30 and 39 - and these new workers want to do better, and to do more, than their predecessors. The government, in its hope to compete with competitive programs that attract many bright and valuable college grads such as Teach for America, is hoping to hire people who are ready to institute change in a sector that is very used to the rules. A great example of these new and innovative ideas is GovLoop, created by Steve Ressler, which acts as a Facebook for the government! Federal Pay Tops Private Workers - USA Today

At a time when workers' pay and benefits have stagnated, federal employees' average compensation has grown to more than double what private sector workers earn, a USA TODAY analysis finds.

Federal workers have been awarded bigger average pay and benefit increases than private employees for nine years in a row. The compensation gap between federal and private workers has doubled in the past decade.

Federal civil servants earned average pay and benefits of $123,049 in 2009 while private workers made $61,051 in total compensation, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis. The data are the latest available.

Federal Government Needs Massive Hiring Binge, Study Finds

Federal Government Needs Massive Hiring Binge, Study Finds

By Steve Vogel, Washington Post Staff Writer

The federal government needs to hire more than 270,000 workers for "mission-critical" jobs over the next three years, a surge prompted in part by the large number of baby-boomer federal workers reaching retirement age, according to the results of a government-wide survey being released Thursday.

The numbers also reflect the Obama administration's intent to take on several enormous challenges, including the repair of the financial sector, fighting two wars, and addressing climate change.

"It has to win the war for talent in order to win the multiple wars it's fighting for the American people," said Max Stier, president and chief executive of the Partnership for Public Service, the think tank that conducted the survey of 35 federal agencies, representing nearly 99 percent of the federal workforce.
